Welcome to the Route 9/35 Main Street Bridge PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTER

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), committed to developing transportation improvements that best balance transportation needs, the environment, community concerns and costs, is holding this Virtual Public Information Center (PIC) to provide local residents and businesses with information on the Route 9/35, Main Street Bridge Project.

The overall purpose of this project is to enhance safety and improve operations at the interchange of Route 9 and Route 35 from the Route 9/Main Street Interchange northward to the existing bridge over the active Conrail line. The high truck volume and substandard design features contribute to excessive delays and a high number of same-direction crashes.

To reach as many people as possible, this PIC will be held virtually between Monday, June 17, 2024, through Friday, June 28, 2024. On this website you will have the opportunity to review a presentation, project information, and submit comments and/or questions.

If you are unable to view the website but are interested in learning about this project, please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The bridge has been identified by the New Jersey Department of Transportation as structurally deficient based on the poor condition of the superstructure. The purpose of this project is to address the structural deficiencies. Since the existing crossing is no longer needed, the bridge will be partially demolished, with the existing opening filled in and paved over.

Final design was completed in April 2023 and the project is currently in the construction phase. After a competitive bid process, the project was awarded to the winning contractor in June 2023 and mobilization is ongoing.

The construction will be federally funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Construction is scheduled to start in early Fall 2023 and will be complete by Summer 2024.

The proposed work is scheduled to occur in two main construction stages. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times, as will access to adjacent ramps, streets, and driveways, except as follows:

For Stage 1, Route 34 southbound and the ramp to Perrine Road will be temporarily closed, and traffic detoured for approximately 2 weeks.

For all stages, the intersection of Washington Avenue and Route 34 will be temporarily closed, and traffic detoured.

Temporary nighttime and weekend closures may also be required for final paving activities.

During Stage 1, a short term detour will be implemented for Route 34 southbound traffic between Route 9 and Perrine Road. Motorists will be directed down Route 9 southbound, make a U-turn at the Schulmeister Road jughandle, come back up Route 9 northbound, and exit onto Perrine Road.

During all stages, a detour will be implemented for Washington Avenue traffic between Park Circle and Route 34. Traffic will be directed down Park Circle to Athens Avenue and vice versa.

Lightweight aggregate fill has a significantly reduced density than traditional aggregate fill. It is typically made using recycled products such as glass. Use of lightweight materials will reduce the load effects on existing structures and also reduce both short- and long-term settlement, while still providing adequate strength to support the anticipated loads. Use of these materials is also a sustainable solution as it is produced from recycled glass.

A reinforced earth wall consists of alternating layers of reinforcement and soil. It is a cost-effective solution that requires significantly less maintenance than alternate wall types such as traditional concrete cantilevered retaining walls.
